A few years ago, an employee at one of our health insurance groups passed away unexpectedly. His family was, of course, devastated to lose him so suddenly.

When his group life insurance claim was processed, his wife was horrified to discover that the beneficiary listed on his policy was an old girlfriend!! He had never updated his beneficiary designation, after getting married.

Talk about adding insult to injury.

So where ever you have life insurance - at work, or on your own policies - double-check and make sure that your current wishes are reflected in who you have listed there. Remember, life insurance beneficiary designations override any other instructions. You want to get this right.
