You can often judge something’s value by it’s cost. An experience with one of my customers has reminded me recently that health insurance is one of those things. It can be expensive, but it can also be very much worth it.

Last summer, I sat down with this customer - a gentleman I’d been acquainted with for about 10 years. He was getting a new job, and wanted help figuring out what to do about health insurance for the three months before his new coverage began, at his new employer.

We looked at COBRA from his old employer, as well as several other options. He even considered going without coverage, since the time period was so short, and because neither he nor his wife had any health issues.

In the end, he settled on a lower-cost HSA with a solid insurance company, and he started his new job.

Then, two weeks before his work coverage was to kick in, he suddenly had a massive stroke. Thankfully he survived. But he was in the hospital for over a month, and then had extensive rehabilitative therapy to endure.

One hospital bill alone was for over $200,000. And of course many other doctors sent their own bills too.

The important thing is that he got the care that he needed, and because of his health insurance, his finances are going to be just fine. He can keep that policy until age 65 if he wants, so he doesn’t ever have to worry about losing health insurance.

It’s a good reminder to me that insurance (of any kind) is really for those large, unexpected, potentially devastating costs. Even though you may go years without any claims, if you have just one, the coverage can save the day. And even if you don’t have claims, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that your affairs are in order, and that you are protected.

On a personal note, when this customer’s wife said I could share their story with you, she was kind enough to add, “You have been a great insurance agent and friend during this time.”

These are the experiences that make me feel really proud of what we do here. And my thoughts and prayers are with this couple, for the recovery ahead.
